Cancer treatment at home FAQs

What is the first step after my consultant refers me?

Welcome Call – The patient liaison lead undertakes an introduction call with the patient to verify referral information and will provide an overview of the service provided by Sciensus. The clinical pathway nurse contacts the patient to discuss their treatment plan.

Is having my treatment at home safe?

Your immunity can be weaker during treatment, so it’s important you protect yourself and minimise your risk of cross infection from things like colds or flu. It is also sensible to ask any visitors who are, or have recently been unwell if they can arrange to visit you when they are fully recovered.

Who will administer my treatment?

During each treatment you’ll receive a home visit from a highly experienced chemotherapy nurse, who’ll be there to give emotional and practical support. We know it’s reassuring to see a familiar face so, unless there’s a good reason, we strive to ensure you see a dedicated team of 3 nurses throughout your treatment.

Who supports me during my treatment?

We provide you with a named team, who will get to know you, your family and your needs. Included in your Sciensus team will be a dedicated patient liaison lead who will make sure that you always have a clear view of your treatment schedule and make sure that everything goes according to plan. Your team will consist of:

Nursing team – You will be treated by a dedicated team of specialist chemotherapy nurses.

Patient liaison lead – Available through a direct telephone number to make sure everything runs smoothly.

Clinical nurse specialist – Available to provide counselling and holistic support (on referral).

Care bureau – Available 24/7 on the telephone to provide clinical support and advice

How much will my medication cost?

As no VAT is applied on drugs administered at home, treatment is often significantly cheaper if you’re paying for treatment yourself.

Who do I speak to if I have questions or concerns about my treatment?

If you have any questions or concerns you can call our care bureau, which is a telephone advice service for you and your loved ones. The service is operated by experienced nurses providing round-the-clock support.
